I almost listed my property on Airbnb… but what I found made me build this instead. https://lnkd.in/gVRn4PKt
A few days back, I was planning to list a property on Airbnb in a tier-2 Indian city.
As an MBA and a product enthusiast, my instinct was to study the market before investing time and money.
That’s when I noticed something intriguing.
And honestly, a little frustrating.
A market skew that hurts growth.
On Airbnb in smaller Indian cities:
- Top listings dominate visibility due to more number of reviews/ratings → More trust
- These properties surge prices, especially in peak seasons
- New but worthy listings get buried under low trust and zero bookings
Over time, this snowballs into something bigger:
❌ Budget-conscious travelers exit to OTAs like MakeMyTrip and to standard guest-houses and hotels
❌ Risk-averse users pay a premium for highly-rated listings - reducing exploration
❌ New hosts lose confidence
❌ The market becomes monopolized and expensive
📉 Airbnb's Total Addressable Market (TAM) in this segment shrinks
📉 And as a marketplace, it's losing its essence, failing to offer fair visibility and opportunity to new supply
Let’s be honest, Airbnb can’t (and shouldn’t) directly control host pricing.
However, it can make an effort to correct the flow of discovery that hurts competitiveness and trust.
But really, I couldn't have left it alone, could I?
So I put on my product management hat and started working on a solution from the ground up.
The goal is clear -
Build trust for new listings, level the playing field, and let market dynamics correct pricing itself
🛠️What I Built - and Why?
This wasn’t just about building features.
Each one is tied to a specific friction in the trust loop.
1️⃣Introduction videos by hosts
✅In brief introductory videos, hosts sit in front of the camera and discuss the property and themselves. AI is used by Airbnb to automatically caption and emphasize key information.
💡Why?
Often, trust is based on a feeling. A welcoming tone, clear photos, or a happy host can all generate emotional connect and trust, even if the property has no ratings.
2️⃣Women Guests Mark It as Healthy
✅If three or more verified female guests rate a new stay as clean and safe, it gets awarded this badge.
So every time a female guest checks-out of a property, they get a nudge to share their thoughts about the safety and cleanliness of the property from a woman-specific-eye
💡Why?
Emotional trust signals are essential for families, couples, and lone travelers, particularly from women, especially when it comes to Tier-2/3 cities. This generates a qualitative layer of social proof even in cases when there are few reviews.
