🎓From Fighting to Stay in School to Graduating from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay: My Journey of Resilience
Though it’s a bit late, here's my mandatory post😊.
On Aug 25, 2024, I graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay with a Master’s in Mathematics - a milestone that reflects years of perseverance & determination.
As the eldest daughter, the first girl child in my family and a first-generation learner, education was a constant battle. my father decided to take me out of school, believing it was enough for a girl to study until then. My mother, however, had different plans. Despite never having gone to school herself, she understood the value of education and fought for me to continue. Due to financial constraints, I had to leave my private school and enroll in a Govt. school in the 9th grade. But I didn’t let this setback deter me. I was determined to pursue my education no matter where or how.
I Worked hard, topped my 9th-12th exams, and pursued B.Sc at DBS PG College Dehradun. Scholarships like USF, INSPIRE, and Mudita helped me immensely.
Initially, I never dreamed of IIT. My path seemed straightforward: complete my BSc, pursue an M.Sc., and either go for a PhD or a job. However, in 2019, I attended a Udayan Care event in Delhi, where I met Vijay Venugopalan, PhD Darshana Joshi, Ph.D. for the first time. That interaction led to an opportunity to work with them on the Uttarakhand Education Survey for the Tehri region, the first initiative of VigyanShaala International. They have guided me ever since, helping me grow & learn from each experience.
Later, with their support, I had the opportunity to intern at The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, in 2020, becoming the first student from my college batch to do so. In 2021, a professor told me about IIT JAM, and for the first time, I dreamed of IIT. I Cleared the exam in 2022 and joined Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay for my M.Sc. in Mathematics.
But it wasn’t easy- there were financial challenges, emotional struggles, & the hurdle of convincing my father to let me move to Mumbai for further studies. But my mother always stood by me. The Unwavering support of my mother, mentors Manish Bhaiya, Vijay Venugopalan, PhD Sir, Darshana Joshi, Ph.D. di, Ripple Mirchandani Varuna Tamta and katya Ma’am, kept me going. From 2019 until today, I’ve learned invaluable lessons, met incredible people from diverse backgrounds, & built meaningful connections.
Holding my degree, I reflected on how far I’ve come - from almost leaving school to graduating from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. I'm always grateful to all who has supported me and believed in my abilities.
One thing I firmly believe is this: no matter the obstacles, with the right support and belief in yourself, anything is possible. Never give up on what we truly want in our life, it takes time, but it’s always worth fighting for our goals & dreams.
Lot More to come, & I’ll keep moving forward😇.
