I secured AIR 43 in CA Finals. And no, I didn’t study 18 hours a day. Was it luck? Big no. Was it only hard work? Also no. I didn’t have a secret strategy. Just a few simple rules that I stuck to, especially when I didn’t feel like it. 1. Coaching was non-negotiable. If class was at 7 AM, I was there at 6:55. If I missed a session, I cleared the backlog within 48 hours. No excuses. 2. During articleship, I communicated my leave expectations at least 6 months in advance to avoid last minute shocks. And yes, club your comp-offs with exam leave. It makes a difference. 3. I planned a routine for my study leave well in advance. I had a minimum daily standard. Some days were 10-hour days. Some were 4-hour days. But zero days? Not allowed. The needle needs to move even on bad days. 4. Revision was my real strategy. No new material in the last 1.5 months. Only revision cycles. Maximum retention > maximum coverage 5. I reduced comparison during prep. I stopped asking “How much have you finished?” Noise creates panic and reduces performance. If you are preparing right now, remember: “You don’t need superhuman motivation. You need a minimum standard.” Protect that long enough and results stop being surprises. What’s one habit that made the biggest difference in your CA journey? #CA #CARank #Big4

I failed at FP&A in my first year in the role. I thought it was just about numbers and Excel sheets. Until I realised that it’s more about understanding the business. Here’s a roadmap that helps navigate through the FP&A role: 1️⃣ 0-3 months: Understand the business model - How does the company make money? - What are the key cost drivers? - What actually impacts profitability? Don’t rush to “do” FP&A. First, understand what you’re analyzing. 2️⃣ 3-6 months: Build your foundation in budgeting - Understand how budgets are created (not just filled) - Learn assumptions behind revenue & cost planning - Track actuals vs budget and focus on variances This is where finance starts becoming forward-looking. 3️⃣ 6-9 months: Move from numbers to narratives - Start answering: why did this happen? - Connect financials with business actions - Communicate insights in simple, clear language Numbers matter. But interpretation matters more. 4️⃣ 9-12 months: Step into strategy conversations - Use your understanding of budgets to challenge assumptions - Participate in planning discussions - Suggest improvements, not just report gaps This is where FP&A shifts from support to influence. Year 1 is not about mastering everything at once. It’s about building a bridge between Past performance and Future strategy. #FPA #Budgeting #Forecasting #Variance #Finance #Reporting
