This Indian founder just became OpenAI’s new CTO after they acquired his startup for $1.1 Billion. Here's the story: Vijaye Raji graduated from Pondicherry University in 1999 with a BE degree and a love for coding. He didn’t have a computer at home, so he taught himself to code on a library computer. At one point, he convinced the librarian to lock him inside overnight so he could keep coding. In 2000, he moved to Seattle to join Microsoft. His first salary was $72,000, a number he thought was a typo, coming from $2,600 per month in India. He spent the next decade there, stuck in green card processing, learning, building, growing. In 2011, he joined Facebook as a Software Engineer. He rose to VP and built the Seattle office from 12 people to 6,500. He once considered leaving, until Mark Zuckerberg personally asked him to stay. In 2021, he left Facebook and founded Statsig, a product that helps companies run experiments and improve user experience through data. One of their customers? OpenAI. In 2025, OpenAI acquired Statsig for $1.1 Billion. They didn’t just buy the product, they brought in Vijaye as their CTO of Applications. From coding in a library in Pondicherry to leading one of the world’s most important AI companies, Vijaye’s journey is proof that talent isn’t defined by pedigree. No IIT. No IIM.
