๐ MSC Container Ship Tragedy off Kochi Coast โ A Wake-Up Call for the
Export Community ๐๐ข
Date: 25 May 2025
Location: 38 nautical miles off Kochi, India
Incident: The Liberian-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 sank while en route from Vizhinjam to Kochi. The ship was carrying 643 containers, 13 of which had hazardous materials including calcium carbide.
๐ฅ What Happened?
A technical failure led to sudden flooding in a cargo hold, causing the vessel to list and eventually capsize.
๐งฏ Rescue & Response
โ All 24 crew members were safely rescued by the Indian Coast Guard.
๐ข๏ธ However, 367.1 MT of furnace oil and 84.44 MT diesel pose a massive oil spill risk.
Indian Coast Guard and Navy have launched urgent containment operations.
๐ฑ Environmental Impact
Threat to Keralaโs marine life, fisheries, and coastal ecosystem.
Risk of toxic chemical leakage and long-term pollution.
Emergency declared by Kerala Government.
๐จ What Should Exporters Learn?
Insurance is Non-Negotiable โ Always ensure marine cargo is fully covered.
Know Your Vessel & Route โ Vet the logistics partnerโs reliability and safety record.
Have a Crisis Backup Plan โ Track shipments and prepare alternative plans.
๐ Why This Matters?
For agro and fresh produce exporters like us, timing is critical. A delay of even 2โ3 days in a temperature-sensitive shipment can result in total cargo loss.
This tragedy reminds us that supply chain resilience is as important as product quality.
๐ง Our Takeaway:
The ocean may connect us to global markets, but it also teaches us humility.
Letโs invest in responsible logistics, climate-conscious policies, and transparent trade practices.
๐ฃ Letโs not wait for the next disaster to take action.

From Local to Global โ Powered by Women!
Over 100 women farmers from Dhenkanal, Odisha, have exported 10 tonnes of Amrapali mangoes to Europe โ including UK and Italy ๐ฎ๐ณโก๏ธ๐
Trained under global standards, supported by FPOs and APEDA, theyโve proven that when farmers are empowered, they donโt chase โ they lead.
As an exporter, this is the India I want to represent:
โ Empowered growers
โ Transparent systems
โ Global value realization
Letโs build an export ecosystem where our farmers stand tall, not chase middlemen.
